Foster Care

If our world were a better place our intake nurse Kelly would not have received that call about Lisa Ann. The day DFCS and Child Protective Services took custody, this little girl should have been enjoying her fifth birthday, perhaps at a party or at a park with friends. Instead, she was moved into foster care. She had Herpes, apparently from her dad and her uncle.
Then we got a call about Carolyn. She had Shaken Baby Syndrome and was now blind. If that were not enough, she had two broken legs and a fractured right arm; a lot for a nine month old child to have experienced. Later Kelly received another call, this time about Kenny, a child with Spina Bifida, Microcephalus, HIV exposure and Fetal Alcohol Syndrome.

Welcome to Childkind and to the world of just a few of the nearly 600 children served in our foster care program.
What happens to these kids?
With Childkind they are placed with extraordinary foster and adoptive moms and dads in real homes. Additionally, we surround families with an array of supportive services, medical equipment, and supplies. Our community partners like Fragile Kids Foundation and Families of Children Under Stress (FOCUS) add special funding, summer camps, and respite as well.

Childkind is in fact a community of foster and adoptive parents, plus staff, volunteers, and donors dedicated to supporting in-home placement for children with medical and developmental challenges.
